Indonesia Loses on Penalties

Malaysia broke Indonesian hearts at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Monday night, winning football gold at the Southeast Asian Games on penalty kicks.
Indonesia started in barnstorming fashion courtesy of a goal inside the first five minutes courtesy of defender Gunawan Dwi Cahyo’s header from a corner.
The rampant Merah Putih thought it had scored a second midway through the first half, but the referee ruled it offside. And this proved a turning point as Malaysia upped the pace and equalized after 35 minutes through Omar Asaruddin.
After dominating play for much of the first forty fiver minutes, Indonesia visibly tired during the second half, and with neither side able to take their chances, the game went into extra time after the 90 minutes ended deadlocked.
Indonesia had another goal ruled out for offside during the first period of extra time, and despite ending the stronger of the two teams, the Merah Putih was unable to secure victory.
And so the final went to penalty kicks to decide the gold medalists, where Malaysia won 4-3.
Indonesia last won a football gold during the SEA Games in Manila in 1991, and suffered a tragic loss to Thailand in 1997, also on penalty kicks at Gelora Bung Karno.
